PhenanthrenePhenanthrene is one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Chemical Formula:
C14H10
Other names:
Layman's explanation:
Phenanthrene can be derived from coal tar and can also be found in products of incomplete combustion. Some of the known sources of phenanthrene in the atmosphere are wood combustion, vehicular emissions, coke plants, foundries, coal and oil burning, aluminum plants, and synfuel plants. It is also widely distributed in the aquatic environment. There is no commercial production or use of penanthrene. Phenanthrene can cause photosensitization of the skin in humans. There is a large body of literature on the carcinogenicity and toxicity of other PAHs but the toxicity data for phenanthrene is limited.
