Dieldrin

Dieldrin is a toxic decay product of the insecticide aldrin.

Chemical Formula: C12H8Cl6O1
Other names: 1,2,3,4,10,10-Hexachloro-6,7-exo-epoxy-1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-endo-exo-1,4.5,8-dimethanonaphthalene
Layman's explanation: Dieldrin is an organochlorine hydrocarbon that arises when the insecticide aldrin rapidly degrades in the environment under the action of sunlight or bacteria. It is actually dieldrin that gives aldrin its potent insecticidal properties. This chemical is toxic to humans and wildlife and spreads to remote regions of the planet, hence its place on the U.N.'s list of the Dirty Dozen.
