CyclohexaneHexane is a six-membered ring that is a naturally occuring hydrocarbon.
Chemical Formula:
C6H12
Other names:
Hexahydrobenzene,
Hexanaphthene,
hexamethylene
Layman's explanation:
Cyclohexane exists naturally in petroleum, but is also commercially produced by hydrolizing benzene. It is relatively volatile with a boiling point lower than that of water. The ability of cyclohexane to assume different conformations lends itself to a vast array of chemistry. Cyclohexabe is used as solvent for lacquers and resins, paint intermediate and varnish remover, in the extraction of essential oils, in analytical chemical for molecular weight determination. Also it is used in the manufacture of adipic acid, benzene, cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, cyclohexyl chloride, nitrocyclohexane, solid fuel for camp stoves, in industrial recrystallization of steroids, and in fungicidal formulations. Cyclohexane is also used in the preparation of nylon.
