Empirical formula: C10Cl12
Temperature: 25.0 °C
Formula weight: 545.542 g/mole
Common name: Mirex
Trade name: Dechlorane
Short description: Mirex is a pesticide banned in most of the world.
Layman's explanation: Mirex is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) banned by the United Nations Environmental Programme and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is one of the original "dirty dozen" chemicals targeted for elimination by the International treaty signed at the Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2001. These include a variety of toxic pesticides and industrial chemicals that do not degrade easily in the environment and can travel through air, rivers, and oceans to places far away from where they were originally released (e.g., to the Arctic). Since most of these compounds are highly lipophilic (prefer to dissolve in fat rather than water) they can biomagnify in food chains where they can cause severe health effects in wildlife and humans (e.g., cancer). Mirex is in the family of pesticides that are synthesized from hexachlorocyclopentadiene.
