Layman's explanation:
Dichlorodifluormethane is a colorless gas with an ether-like odor. It is nonflammable and
has low toxicity. In the early 1930s, Midgley found dichlorodifluoromethane or freon to
be an ideal refrigerant, replacing toxic chemicals such as ammonia and dichloromethane.
In addition, this gas has been used in aerosol propellants such as sprays in cosmetics
and inhalers for medications. However, freon is bad for the environment and was banned
in 1996 after more than 60 years of use. Due to the ban, other less damaging chemicals
have been developed.
