Layman's explanation: Pentacosane is a cuticular hydrocarbon found in most insects. It is a contact pheromone produced by female insects. It is part of an attractive blend in Orgyia leucostigma and a defensive secretive gland in Rhinotermitidae. Capparidaceae (Cleome monophylla L.), a plant with insecticidal properties, contains 9 % pentacosane.
