Pheromones
Correct! Pheromones are chemicals produced by living organisms to transmit messages to other members of the same species. Identified pheromones are often used to control and trap pests or invasive species in forests and fields. They are also used to catch pests in pantries and attics. For example the German cockroach, Blatella germanica, one of the most widespread residential and food-associated pests in the world, produces the sex pheromone blattellaquinone. This compound was identified and synthesized in 2005 and may be used in the future to control cockroach infestations. The use of pheromones for pest control is a good environmental alternative to common pesticides, which often are health hazards for humans, pets, and wildlife.
