Sulfuric acid
Correct! Sulfuric acid is formed when a gas released by the cut onion (propanethial S-oxide) hits the water on the eye and in the tear ducts of our eye. The onion contains sulfur compounds including natural antibiotics but also enzymes and amino acid sulfoxides that upon breakdown form instable sulfenic acids, which in turn decompose to the volatile gas that forms sulfuric acid with the water of your eyes and irritates them. Your eyes respond with producing more tears to dilute the acid and flush it out. You can minimize the generation of the gas by placing the onion in the fridge before cutting it or you could wear glasses protecting your eyes somewhat from the propanethial S-oxid raising from the cut onion.
