Correct! Butenethiol makes up between 40 to 45% of the defense secretion of skunks. It is one of the two strong smelling thiols (or mercaptans) present in the liquid; the other one is methylbutanethiol. Additional components of the spray may be other thiols, thioacetates, or alkaloids. To get rid of the strong stench, one can oxidize the mercaptans to a less smelling compound such as sulfonic acid using for example hydrogen peroxide. Skunks produce the defense spray in two glands on the side of the anus. They store ca. 15 g of the liquid and need about one week to replenish it.
